In September 1998 Horseshoe Gaming agreed upon an agreement to acquire Empress Enjoyment, operator of riverboat gaming operations within Hammond, Indiana, near Chicago, and in Joliet, Illinois. The Empress Hammond riverboat supplied 43, 000 square-feet of gaming room, with gambling available at 1, 677 slots machines, fifty-five table games, in addition to 8 poker furniture. The Empress Joliet, with 30, 000 square-feet of video gaming space, housed 1, 072 slot equipment, 46 game dining tables, and 7 poker tables. The Joliet site included a 102-room hotel in addition to an 80-space pastime vehicle park. As legalized gambling broadened outside of Las Vegas, Jack Binion pursued online business offerings in these new market segments.
